SMAC Buy-Sell Signals Week Ending October 2, 2020

One of the things I like to do on the weekend is look to see which stocks have produced a buy or sell signal using the Simple Moving Average Crossover (SMAC) trading strategy over the last week’s trading period. With the volatility of the market over the last month, there have been some interesting trends. This week I noticed that several stocks in my own personal portfolio flashed sell signals in the last five days.

First up is one that I showed in my previous article: Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

I should probably mention why I like AMD so much. The summer after I graduated from high school, I went to work for a temp agency. On my first job with the temp agency I was sent to the construction management offices of a company overseeing the construction of Fab 25 here in Austin, Texas. That was going to be AMD’s newest and most innovative semiconductor manufacturing facility of the time. The place where they built the Athlon chips that went into personal computers competing with Intel (INTC). I went back to work for that construction management team under contract through the temp agency for another year whenever I would go home from Texas A&M on break my freshman year. It was an amazing experience working alongside civil engineers and project managers as well as accountants and analysts. After that experience I made it my priority to work for AMD when I graduated from college.

So it was in 1998, again working for a different temp agency, that I made my way through the backdoor to work at Fab 25. One year later I was brought on as a full time employee there. Eventually, the market being what it was at the time, AMD spun off Fab 25 in 2003 and later became Spansion in 2005. I worked there until 2013 before I moved to Upstate New York to work for another AMD spin-off Globalfoundries. Funny how that worked out.

Even today, I’ve tried very hard to get back into working for AMD to no avail even having a good friend working there doing machine learning work. He’s put in a good word for me multiple times, and I’ve interviewed there for at least three positions. It’s just not working out this time around, but I’m not giving up. Whenever I can I’m still knocking on their door asking if I could be let in and given a chance.

So, of course, I own AMD stock.

While I don’t own ALL the FAANG stocks (only AMZN and NFLX as of this writing), it is incredibly fascinating that all of them flashed sell signals using the 20/50-day approach to SMAC trading.

They also all have fairly similar looking daily price charts, so it’s probably no surprise that they all have recent sell signals.

Here are a couple more examples of stocks in my portfolio with sell signals.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Scanning the S&P 500 for buy signals in the last week, I found a few, one of note, Intel (INTC). Go figure!

Happy trading!
